Prove Thyself a Man is the product of two fathers attempting to establish a marker by which their sons can measure success or failure in striving after manhood. It has been written as a conversation that the authors hope to have one day with their sons, a conversation upon which they invite the reader to “eavesdrop,” a conversation that directs their sons to be men who are disciplined, gentle, generous, and faithful in their character. The authors draw on biblical stories and their own experiences as fathers (and sons) to provide a number of different examples of how to and not to raise sons. Centering on the premise that fathers and sons have a unique relationship and that fathers hold an unique place of influence in the lives of their sons, Prove Thyself a Man challenges each father to take the mantle of manhood and place it firmly where it belongs; onto their sons. Pointing to the deathbed conversation between King David and his son Solomon, Prove Thyself a Man calls our sons to live lives that illustrate the biblical principles of discipline, gentleness, generosity, and faithfulness. This book, using 1 Kings 2:1-3, shares how to intentionally equip our sons for manhood. Prove Thyself a Man speaks directly to today’s dad, whether he is fathering young preadolescent children, teenagers, or grown sons.
The Midwest Book Review says...
"Pride in one's son is pride in one's life work. Prove Thyself a Man: Encouraging Your Son to Become a Man of Character is a guide for fathers who want to help their sons become solid, productive members of society, living full and meaningful lives. Using the Holy Bible as a reference for setting one's children up for the future with such fundamental values as discipline, generosity, and faithfulness, Prove Thyself a Man is highly recommended..."
Excerpt from Chapter 2:
As David called his son Solomon to his bedside, it is easy to imagine that David was worried about many things. As we have already pointed out, David was not a very good father. He was not very successful in the “daddy-business.” And, even though he was a man after God’s own heart (Acts 13:22), David had not fully kept the Lord’s covenant at all times nor in all aspects of his life. It is clear that David was very concerned that Solomon would take his position in life serious. Notice the “life-position” that David calls Solomon to be accountable for (1 Kings 2:1-3):
As David’s time to die drew near, he charged Solomon his son, saying, “I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man. Keep the charge of the Lord your God. David did not tell Solomon to prove himself a king, nor did he tell him to prove himself a husband, or a father. He charged Solomon to prove himself to be a MAN! Furthermore, David goes on to tell Solomon to “keep the charge of the Lord.”
Boys hear the hearts of your fathers. We cry out with David, “Keep the charge of the Lord.” Where do you start? How do you keep the charge? What is the charge? There are so many questions and so much to share with you that it would take much more than a book to communicate the wisdom of growing into manhood. It would take a lifetime, a lifetime that neither of us might have. Let us boil all of this down into a simple word or phrase that we can get our minds around so that we can understand how we are going to keep the charge. Let us simplify this into a simple word of wisdom that we can get our hands around so that we can understand what we are going to do to keep the charge. It is a word that we have already began to discuss – choices.
